personality:
Because of limited screen time in canon, most of what there is to know about Bro Strider is found via Dave’s conversations. However, even in the limited time Bro is shown, a lot can be learnt about him from his actions alone. Bro is shown constantly testing Dave, whether it’s through sneaking up to place Lil’ Cal, his most prized puppet behind Dave when he’s not paying attention, creating really obvious pranks such as tricking Dave into pulling down the ladder to the attic, only to be smothered in a pile of puppet.
Despite coming off as an asshole who simply enjoys terrorizing his little brother/ectobiological son, Bro genuinely cares about Dave. It can easily be argued that all of these tests Bro puts Dave under is to make him a better combatant. For example, when Dave needed Bro’s Sburb cards, Bro had him strife for them. Even though Dave lost, Bro gave them to him.
Bro also exhibits characteristics of extreme bravery; he acts valiantly to gives Dave extra time when it is time to get to the Medium, and also fearlessly fights against Jack Noir on a couple of occasions, the latter ultimately leading to his death when Becq was prototyped and Jack Noir basically became invincible.
Apart from being a super cool ironic dude and an awesome brother to Dave, Bro also has some interests that, needless to say, cause him to stand out. His interest in anime is one of them; he constantly wears his pointy anime sunglasses to the point he would probably feel quite naked without them.
The biggest thing, however, is his possibly unhealthy obsession with puppets. His apartment is filled with them, in the most inconceivable places. Some of them play part in the websites he runs—one of which being a pornographic website involving puppets. Taking this at face value, one can easily assume he must enjoy this particular fetish himself—or he’s taking it to an extreme to be “ironic”—or he has no qualms about how he earns money. Or both. Regardless, Bro has no problem discussing things sexual in nature at the most inopportune times.
Bro Strider always does the best he can to look out for Dave. Lil’ Cal might be his best friend, but really, Dave is the only one who truly matters to him. Ever since Bro infant Dave came into Bro’s life, Dave’s been in the centre of it. He wants what’s best for his little brother, but Bro can only provide so much considering their circumstances.
He’s fiercely independent and prefers to do things his way, but when the time comes he is willing to take one for the team. Trust doesn’t particularly come easy for him, either. However, if Dave trusts someone, Bro is apt to as well. That doesn’t mean he won’t give Dave or any of his friends a hard time, though. Bro never misses out on an opportunity to terrorize his little bro.
One a side note, Bro is a bit of a slob, as is apparent in the visible parts of his apartment. However, it’s more likely than not organized chaos, just like the way he organises the files on his computer.
abilities/powers: Bro is able to wield swords effectively with ease. He is stealthy and fast, therefore capable of launching surprise attacks if he wants to. He’s also technologically savvy, as he is able to configure his sylladex to launch items during rap-offs with Dave. He has also able to use Lil’ Cal in battles to attack his opponent.
Of course, anyone who is able to get an upper hand on Bro could find a way to defeat him, whether it’s through diversion or overpowering him.
Dave is the only person who can break his façade and affect him emotionally; Bro needs to be needed by Dave. He needs that emotional bond with his brother and to know that the little guy still looks up to him. If that’s taken away from him, Bro may not know what to do with himself. Other people are surely capable of this, but it the impact wouldn’t be as extreme.
Also: As far as his typing quick goes, Bro types in black courier without punctuation, with the exception of ending punctuation. Red text may be used for emphasis and comic sans for irony, as seen here , where he’s referencing Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff.
first person sample:
[There isn’t a particular reason why he hasn’t gone to sleep yet. Maybe he was just a little wired, but even after checking up on all his sites—and reading Dave’s newest update of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff—he finds himself more bored and actually tired. That’s when he turns to gaming. Once he’s focused on one of his games while laying on the living room futon, it’s easier for him to slow down.
Before he knows it, actually, he’s fallen asleep on the futon with the gaming control on his chest. When he wakes, the morning sun is leaking through the living room window.]
hey bro.
are you awake
you need to be dont you have school
[When he gets no answer from Dave, Bro gets up and drags himself to Dave’s bedroom with Lil’ Cal in hand. Dave’s still fast asleep, curled up in his blankets. Regardless of if Dave has school or not, he can’t just be sleeping the day away.
Bro sets Lil’ Cal on Dave’s chest, so the puppet is looking directly down at the sleeping boy. After giving Dave a firm shake, he uses his stealth skills to quickly leave the room. Surely Dave will be awake soon now.]
third person sample:
Bro knew the day was coming soon, the day he had spent the past thirteen years preparing Dave for. It was kind of ironic, in the worst way imaginable, that it was. He and Dave had a good thing going, with their sick beats and rap-offs. Bro had enjoyed every bit of it, every single moment. From the moment he first picked up Dave, Bro had known that he was something special.
Dave had grown into someone Bro could be proud of; the younger Strider brother showed so much potential in everything he pursued. He still didn’t stand a chance in strifes against Bro, but he never backed down, and he could certainly hold his own in the rap-offs. It was still crazy, how much time had gone by. No longer were the days when Bro needed to show Dave how wield a sword use a computer; for a thirteen-year-old, Dave was self-reliant.
Bro stood by Dave’s bedroom door for a moment, listening to talk to one of his online friends about…whatever. Bro wasn’t interested in what they were talking about; he was simply making sure Dave was doing alright.
Of course, Bro would never say that.
Striders don’t talk about feelings.
After several minutes, Bro made his presence known, leaning in the doorway. “Let’s go out for dinner tonight.” Striders don’t cook, either.
